Chinese Literature Appreciation & Use of Chinese for Secondary School Students (Years 7-9)

The course will provide an opportunity for students to read and analyse a variety of literary texts, including classical Chinese. Particular attention is paid on effective writing and oral communication. Students will be able to understand and interpret different points of views critically, and are expected to develop the ability of self-learning.

Reading & Writing Enhancement

1. Develop the 10 effective skills in reading comprehension
2. Strengthen the writing process
3. Analyse a variety of written work & practice writing
4. Understand & apply rhetoric in writing

Vocabulary Enhancement & Basic Chinese Grammar

1. Understand the use of a range of vocabulary
2. Learn the basic elements of Chinese grammar
3. Study 400 Chinese idioms with a clear understanding of their sources & usage
4. Study a variety of idiomatic expressions

Classical Chinese & Translation

1. Understand the meaning of classical Chinese essays; translate them into modern Chinese
2. Conduct self-evaluation about the knowledge of classical Chinese
3. Recognise the features of classical Chinese
4. Understand the pre-Qin essays & develop the knowledge of Chinese culture

Putonghua Enhancement

1. Read aloud in Putonghua accurately
2. Prepare for Putonghua exams
3. Compare & contrast the word usage between Cantonese & Putonghua
4. Learn to type Chinese on computer by pinyin input method
